Biography

Joe Hurley's 11th Annual All-Star Irish Rock Revue will enter it's 2nd decade as the grandest and most beloved musical event of the St Patrick's season in NYC, at the Highline Ballroom On Sat Mar 13th. "Joe Hurley's All-Star Irish-Rock-a-palooza receives rave reviews every year as the biggest St Pat's Party in town. Hurley himself is revered for his soulful, Shane Macgowan-esque baritone..." NEW YORK MAG

Here's what to expect...A PADDY ROCK & ROLL CIRCUS! Every year during the St Pat's season, NYC singer-songwriter Joe Hurley salutes his Irish heritage with a blazing musical extravaganza that celebrates Ireland's musical gifts to the world..The All-Star Irish Rock Revue.

Gathering friends and performers from NYC punk-rock legends to Broadway stars, from best-selling novelists to star comedians and rock legends-From Rock & Roll Hall-Of-Famers to downtown luminaries, from visiting Irish entertainers to up and coming local singers, the performers all dive into Hurley's vision of 'The Great Irish Songbook', backed by The Revue's sublime All-Star band.

The guest singers rip through the classics of Thin Lizzy, U2, Van Morrison, The Undertones, Sinead, SLF, The Pogues, Declan MacManus, Boomtown Rats, John Lydon, Morrisey, The Dubliners, The Chieftains, Traditional gems and much more. From The punk of the Undertones "Teenage kicks" to the soul of Van's "Domino", from the pure rock bliss of Thin Lizzy's 'The Boys are Back In Town" and U2's "I Will Follow" to the poetry of the Pogues "Sally MacLennan", the songs of the Irish are sung by an incredibly electic and extraordinary group of performers.

Guest performers at The Irish Rock Revue have included: Fountains of Wayne singer Chris Collingwood, Ronnie Spector, Laura Cantrell, Martha Wainwright, Jolie Holland, Garland Jeffreys, Oscar winner Sam Bisbee, Gogol Bordello's singer Eugene Hutz, Nada Surf's Matthew Caws, Modrocket, STEW(and entire PASSING STRANGE Band), The Crystals LaLa Brooks (da doo run run!), Garland Jeffreys, Carrie Rodriguez, Ivan Julian, Lenny Kaye, cabaret star Maude Maggart, Ireland's Chart-topping Republic of Loose, Grammy winner Susan Mckeown, Tony Winner Michael Cerveris, 2009 National Book Award Winner Colum McCann, Broadway stars Antonique Smith & Annie Golden , Jesse Malin, Mike Viola, Wille Nile, Kristeen Young, Don Fleming, Joe Mcginty, John S Hall, Irish sensations The High Kings, Uk Comic legend Steve Frost, legendary producer Tony Visconti, and members of the following groups: Patti Smith Band, The Dictators, Clanaad, The New York Dolls, Bruce Springsteen , The Mekons, Cracker, Ian Hunter Band.

The Revue is hosted by Joe Hurley & Ed Rogers, with some assistance from comedian Steve Frost! DJ Gaz of East Village Radio will be spinning Irish gems between sets

Joe Hurley, per tradition, offers up an electrifying set to kick off the night at 645pm. Called 'One of NY's most entertaining frontmen-his distinctive vocals can be as raucous as all get-out and as sorrowful as a baritone can be....Hurley is the best singer of vowels in rock" by the Village Voice, Hurley has released many critically acclaimed CDs and is featured on the recent SONY release "Essential Irish Drinking Songs" with his ballad "Amsterdam Mistress", alongside classics from the Pogues, the Dubliners and the Clancys.

Hurley and Irish Novelist Colum McCann(2009 National Book Award Winner) recently released a CD-EP"The House That Horse Built" inspired by McCann's Novel "Let the Great World Spin". Their CD is garnering teriffic reviews, and features Paddy Moloney of THE CHIEFTAINS-Hurley & McCann recently returned from a month-long soldout European tour, and are currently working on a full length CD of songs for the novel.

Hurley, a London-bred, Irish-Blooded New Yorker, has sung with THE CHIEFTAINS, The Nick Drake Orchestra, Judy Collins, playwright Sam Shepard, Nellie Mckay, Laura Cantrell, Shane MacGowan, Marianne Faithfull, The Waco Bros, the Gypsy Kings, Andrea Marcovicci & Maude Maggart. He is the leader of two NYC groups, Rogue's March, and Joe Hurley & The Gents, and has appeared everywhere from Lincoln Centre To Central Park Summerstage, from the Delacorte Theatre(where he threw a 60th birthday party for the late Marc Bolan, with his onstage musical guests Patti Smith, Robert Gordon, Lloyd Cole, and Moby) to festivals across the USA. He has been produced on records by Tony Visconti, PJ Harvey, Jimmy Harry, James Mastro & Don Fleming, among others.

"Outstanding concert performances...best of all was Joe Hurley's rumbling bass-baritone version of 'Send in the Clowns" NEW YORK TIMES Oct 2008
